State Rep. Jerry Neyer, R-Shepherd, on Wednesday released the following statement after spearheading the passage of his House Resolution 99, which supports President Trump’s policies to enable potash mining in Michigan:

“Beneath the soil of Osceola and Mecosta counties lies the highest-grade potash deposit known anywhere in the world. Potash is critical in the production of agricultural fertilizer. This mineral can boost crop yields, water retention, and food quality. Currently the U.S. imports 92% of its potash, but we as Michiganders have the power to change that.

“This deposit offers more than just economic potential. It will provide steady production, economic independence, and support for our rural communities. Michigan Potash & Salt Company’s proposed facility in Evart would create hundreds of construction jobs and over 150 permanent positions, all while strengthening our agricultural backbone with a reliable domestic source of this essential mineral.

“Michigan is ready. The permits are in place. The demand is rising. With bipartisan support and proper oversight, this project will ensure Michigan plays a leading role in America’s mineral future. Secure, sustainable, and locally sourced right here at home.”
