State Rep. Jerry Neyer this week sent a letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urging immediate action to implement the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s emergency waiver allowing the sale of E15 fuel across Michigan, a move he says would provide much-needed relief as gas prices continue to rise.
The letter, signed by Rep. Neyer and 24 other House Republicans, highlights growing concerns over fuel costs, noting that prices have climbed above $4 per gallon in many areas, placing added strain on families and small businesses across the state.
“We have an opportunity right now to provide immediate relief,” said Neyer (R-Shepherd). “Michigan families and businesses shouldn’t be kept waiting while we have the solution in front of us.”
E15 fuel, which contains a higher blend of ethanol, typically sells for 10 to 20 cents less per gallon than standard gasoline. However, access to E15 remains limited in several of Michigan’s most populated counties due to state vapor pressure restrictions during the summer months, effectively blocking availability for millions of residents.
The EPA’s emergency waiver provides states with the flexibility to allow E15 sales, but action at the state level is still required to ensure consistent access statewide.
Neyer also emphasized the added benefit for Michigan’s agriculture industry, noting that increased use of E15 would support corn growers and strengthen local markets.
“This is a rare opportunity where we can lower costs for consumers while also supporting our farmers,” Neyer said. “It’s a win for families, a win for small businesses, and a win for Michigan agriculture.”
In the letter, Neyer and his colleagues called on the governor to implement enforcement discretion and allow for fuel parity across all counties for the remainder of the year.
“The federal government has already provided the flexibility,” Neyer said. “Now it’s up to the state to act and deliver immediate relief for families and communities across Michigan.”
