State Rep. Jerry Neyer last week secured the passage of a bipartisan budget plan that makes targeted cuts to wasteful state spending while investing key resources in education and roads. The budget, which passed with significant bipartisan support, lowers the overall budget by nearly $2.5 billion and still secures historic tax relief and other investments in key infrastructure and programming.

“We proved that you can make targeted cuts, fund key programs, and find room for tax cuts all in the same year,” said Neyer, R-Shepherd. “The budget process looked very different this year, but I’m proud that our end result leaves state spending, our schools, local roads, and working families in a much better financial position than last year.”

The budget implements a national effort to provide tax relief to working families and seniors by eliminating taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security income. This will provide meaningful relief to more than 500,000 Michiganders, helping workers, seniors, and families stretch their paychecks further and keep up with the rising cost of living.

Starting this year, the state budget will put nearly $2 billion more toward roads. These dollars will pave the way for continued improvements to Michigan’s infrastructure, including local roads and bridges. The agreement also ensures that the dollars people pay at the pump are used to fix the roads.

The budget includes a record-high $10,050 per-student investment for Michigan schools, a $442 increase from last year. House Republicans also fought to ensure school safety and mental health funding were in the final budget. Through tough negotiations, these resources – totaling $321 million to support both public and private schools – are in place to protect Michigan kids in the classroom.
