State Rep. Jaime Greene’s plan to preserve critical road funding for Macomb County passed the Michigan Senate today with unanimous bipartisan support.
The measure ensures Macomb County will retain more than $1 million in crucial transportation funds aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. The county has relied on these funds for years to improve local infrastructure and maintain road safety.
“With unanimous support in the Senate, we’ve demonstrated that this issue transcends party lines,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “These funds are essential for keeping our roads safe and reducing congestion, and I’m proud we’re working together to ensure Macomb County has the resources it needs.”
The concern stemmed from changes in population that threatened to disrupt a portion of the state’s transportation funding formula. Rapid growth in Kent County placed it in the same subcategory as Macomb County, potentially forcing the two counties to split funding and reducing the amount each received.
Greene’s legislation, House Bill 5922, adjusts population thresholds in the funding formula, allowing both Macomb and Kent counties to continue receiving their historical share of funds.
“This solution ensures fairness and stability for both counties,” Greene said. “I’m grateful to my colleagues in both chambers for recognizing the urgency of this issue and I’m confident the governor will recognize the importance of this legislation and sign it into law without delay.”
Having received bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, Greene’s bill now heads to Gov. Whitmer’s desk for her consideration.
