State Rep. Jaime Greene today supported a resolution that would provide cheaper gasoline options for drivers across Southeast Michigan.
Currently, the state of Michigan is under a state of energy emergency, declared by Gov. Whitmer on April 2, 2026. The declaration saves drivers money at the gas pump by easing the requirements on fuel blends, allowing for the sale of higher vapor pressure gasoline. The declaration is set to expire on July 1, which would directly result in higher gas prices for local families. However, it can be extended if the Legislature takes action.
“Families across Michigan are struggling with high energy costs,” said Greene (R-Richmond). “As budgets are being stretched thin, Michigan drivers should not have to face higher prices because of regulatory barriers that limit fuel options. We need to be doing everything in our power to provide relief at the pump.”
House Concurrent Resolution 8 approves an extension of the state of energy emergency. Under Michigan’s Summer Gasoline Program established in 1996, the gasoline sold in the counties of Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne cannot exceed 7.0 psi vapor pressure from June 1 to September 15. As a result, this prevents E15 from being accessible to drivers in those counties during the summer months. Extending the state of energy emergency would temporarily waive the fuel restrictions for an additional 77 days, saving Michigan residents more money on gasoline.
“We are putting consumers first,” Greene said. “By waiving outdated seasonal fuel restrictions, we can expand access to a lower-cost fuel option and give families and commuters more flexibility as they manage their budgets. Every dollar matters.”
