State Rep. Cam Cavitt today gave an update on the status of the Cheboygan Dam and thanked all responding teams for their successful efforts in lowering the water level.
Emergency response crews have continued to pump hundreds of millions of gallons of water through the dam each day. Water levels remained around 7.5 inches below the top of the dam as of Sunday night, and models from the DNR indicate flooding shouldn’t occur until water reaches at least a foot over the top of the dam due to sandbagging and other safety measures.
“I want to thank all of the responding agencies for their incredible work in managing the water level,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “We are grateful to everyone who has been working tirelessly on this project, including the DNR, EGLE, and Michigan State Police. Our community has been under serious threat, and they are working around the clock to make sure the situation remains under control.”
Cavitt emphasized that while significant progress has been made, the situation is developing and will still require careful work and monitoring.
“We can’t let our guard down,” Cavitt said. “The immediate risk level has lowered, but we need to remain vigilant. I’m extremely proud of the work that’s been accomplished so far, and we’re going to keep working to guarantee that the dam is secure.”
