State Rep. Cam Cavitt today joined House Republicans in supporting major legislation focused on lowering costs for hardworking families and improving affordability across Michigan.

“Families throughout Northern Michigan are feeling the strain of rising costs every single day,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “People are dealing with higher utility bills, increasing property taxes, and the soaring costs of buying a home. They need lasting solutions that help them keep more of their hard-earned money. This plan delivers meaningful relief and puts Michigan families first.”

House Bills 5872-5879 form a comprehensive affordability package aimed at reducing financial burdens on homeowners across the state. The legislation would eliminate the state property tax, saving the average Michigan family an estimated $900 each year. The package also includes mandatory utility rate rollbacks to reduce monthly energy costs and repeals Michigan’s real estate transfer tax, lowering expenses for those buying or selling property.

“People shouldn’t be taxed out of the opportunity to own a home or build a future here in Michigan,” Cavitt said. “House Republicans are focused on creating policies that encourage growth, support families, and make our state a more affordable place to live and work. We need to make Michigan a place where families can succeed and stay for generations. Lower taxes, lower energy costs, and responsible policies will help strengthen our communities and create more opportunity for people across our state.”
