State Rep. Cam Cavitt today applauded Senate approval of legislation that will forgive school days cancelled across Northern Michigan following severe storms in March.

“This vote is a victory for students and families,” said Cavitt (R-Cheboygan). “The Senate recognized what our communities went through during these devastating storms and acted accordingly. Families across Northern Michigan are now one step closer to relief.”

House Bill 5797, introduced by Rep. Parker Fairbairn, allows certain school districts across the state to waive four additional school days that were lost due to extreme weather.  The additional days for excusal could only apply to the dates of March 12, 13, 16, and 17.

“This legislation delivers the flexibility schools need after an emergency that no one could have predicted or prevented,” Cavitt said. “I’m glad to see this bipartisan solution continue to move forward. Families have already suffered enough disruption from these storms. This vote helps provide certainty and relief for school districts trying to recover and move on.”

The bill now heads to Gov. Whitmer for her signature.
