State Rep. Jennifer Wortz this week testified in front of the House Committee on Insurance on her bipartisan package that would give Michigan drivers more affordable options for auto insurance.
“We have to address the rising cost of auto insurance across the state,” said Wortz (R-Quincy). “The best way to do that is by giving Michigan drivers more choices in coverage. Families are facing higher costs across the board, and we should be looking for ways to give people more flexibility in choosing the coverage that works for their needs and their budget.”
House Bills 5886-5888, also sponsored by Rep. Nancy Jenkins-Arno (R-Rollin Township) and Rep. Joe Tate (D-Detroit), would give Michigan drivers greater flexibility in choosing their auto insurance coverage while aligning the state’s requirements more closely with other states. The package would allow insurers to offer lower levels of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage statewide, including extending the current $50,000 PIP option to all drivers. It would also eliminate the requirement for drivers to reselect lower coverage limits at every policy renewal, allowing them to maintain their chosen coverage automatically.
The plan would also lower Michigan’s required bodily injury liability coverage from $50,000/$100,000 to $25,000/$50,000, aligning the state’s minimum with the standard used in most other states.
“Michigan drivers deserve the ability to make decisions about their insurance coverage based on their own circumstances,” Wortz continued. “We can provide more affordable options while ensuring drivers have access to the protection they need.”
