Michigan voters have made their concerns regarding government accountability unmistakably clear. In 2024, they elected Republican leadership to the White House, the U.S. Senate, retained Republican control of the U.S. House, and returned Republicans to the majority in the Michigan House of Representatives. Michiganders sent a clear message that they are increasingly worried about the responsible use of our tax dollars.  

That is precisely why it is so troubling to see Oakland County Commission Chair David T. Woodward propose directing $1.5 million in taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood. The proposal comes only weeks after Washtenaw County approved its own taxpayer-funded support for the organization, signaling what seems to be a growing trend among progressive local governments to use county budgets to advance ideological priorities. 

These decisions are not occurring in a vacuum; they reflect a broader effort to expand public funding for an organization that remains one of the most politically divisive in the country. County leaders must recognize that forcing taxpayers to finance organizations deeply involved in partisan politics raises legitimate concerns about public trust and the responsible use of taxpayer resources. 

Planned Parenthood is not a basic healthcare provider. They are one of the nation’s most influential political organizations, with affiliated entities spending millions of dollars each election cycle to support Democratic candidates. In 2024, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan donated nearly $550,000 to their PAC in efforts to elect Democratic candidates across the state. These candidates, if elected, would then pass legislation that allows vulnerable women to become victims of an organization that profits off death. Michigan taxpayers should never be forced to subsidize this. 

Every human life has inherent dignity and worth. We should be working to support women through prenatal care, adoption services, community health clinics, and organizations that provide practical resources to mothers and families, not directing taxpayer dollars toward an organization whose abortion practice remains a central part of its mission. 

County governments face no shortage of competing priorities. Residents expect their tax dollars to be spent on public safety, maintaining roads and infrastructure, supporting parks, expanding senior services, and improving the overall quality of life for everyone. Diverting millions of taxpayer dollars to the abortion industry is a blatant betrayal of the public trust. 

Trust in government is built through transparency and respect for taxpayers. When local governments pursue highly controversial spending initiatives despite substantial public opposition, they risk widening the gap between citizens and their elected representatives.  

County leaders in Oakland and Washtenaw must reject these proposals. Local governments can only function properly when they deliver essential services while accurately reflecting the concerns of the taxpayer.
