State Rep. Ron Robinson (R-Utica) announced a major funding victory for Macomb County residents: a $2.5 million appropriation for the Oakland Macomb Interceptor Drain Drainage District to construct a long-awaited odor and corrosion control facility in Sterling Heights.
Robinson led the effort to include the funding in the recently passed state budget to address decades-long concerns about persistent sewer odors in the area near the confluence of two major sanitary sewer interceptors along 15 Mile Road and the ITC corridor.
“For far too long, residents, businesses, and the community in this area have been affected by the unacceptable odor issues caused by this infrastructure,” said Robinson. “This funding is a direct investment in public health, infrastructure preservation, and quality of life.”
The newly funded project will enable the design and construction of an advanced odor control facility at one of the most hydraulically complex points in the regional sewer system. This facility will help mitigate the effects of hydrogen sulfide gas, which causes pipe degradation and noxious odors, helping to extend the system’s lifespan and greatly reduce, if not eliminate, the nuisance smells affecting nearby neighborhoods, parks, businesses, the Sterling Heights Fire Department, and Sterling Heights High School.
Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller thanked Robinson for his leadership in securing the funding.
“Rep. Ron Robinson heard the concerns of his constituents, has delivered on his promise to address their concerns, and we appreciate his efforts,” Miller said. “This $2.5 million appropriation will be used to construct an odor control facility to address sewer odor issues that have plagued residents for decades.”
“This is a great example of how listening to the community and working together at all levels of government can lead to real, tangible improvements,” said Robinson. “I’m proud to have delivered on a commitment to improve quality of life for families and businesses in our area. This project will bring cleaner air, stronger infrastructure, and a better future for Macomb County.”
