An adopted resolution from state Rep. Jerry Neyer declares March as Agriculture Month in the state of Michigan.
The Michigan food and agriculture industry contributes more than $104.7 billion annually to the state’s economy and is a major source of employment for the state’s workforce. The industry supports over 800,000 jobs, which is roughly 17 percent of the state’s workforce, according to estimates.
The state’s food and agriculture sector is also the second-most diverse in the country with over 50,000 farms – 99 percent of which are family-owned. These farms position Michigan as a leader in the production of asparagus, blueberries, beans, cattle, eggs, flowers, grapes, hops and other items with everyday uses.
“This industry is often overlooked, but its importance to our state and our economy is immense,” Neyer said. “Through my own background, I know the hard work our farmers and ranchers put in so families can put food on their tables and stores can have products readily available to consumers. These livelihoods benefit our lives every day in Michigan. This resolution not only recognizes that, but underscores how thankful we are for it.”
Rep. Neyer has spent the last 30 years working at his family’s dairy farm in mid-Michigan, which has roughly 150 cows. He operates the farm with his father and brother. The first-term legislator is the Republican vice chair on the House Agriculture Committee and has served on the Isabella County Farm Bureau and the Michigan Dairy Marketing Committee.
