LANSING, Mich. — State Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Portland) has announced that the Michigan House has approved a final Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget compromise that reflects the core priorities of Michigan families by investing in safer roads, delivering meaningful tax relief, and strengthening public safety. Johnsen said that even though the deal is not perfect, it advances infrastructure improvements, reins in government waste, and sets Michigan on a path to greater fiscal responsibility.

Key highlights of the budget agreement include:

  • Nearly $2 billion in ongoing funding to repair local roads and bridges across Michigan
  • Stronger public safety investments through the Public Safety Trust Fund, helping communities hire more police officers and reduce crime
  • Tax relief by eliminating state taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security income, helping workers and seniors keep more of what they earn
  • Cutting waste by eliminating thousands of unfilled government positions and ending payments for unused state office space
  • New transparency requirements so taxpayers know exactly how their dollars are being spent
  • More than $2.5 million to replace the failing Brown Road crossing in Barry County

“This compromise was not everything we wanted, but it delivers real wins for Michigan families and small businesses,” Johnsen said. “We are fixing roads and bridges, supporting police to keep communities safe, and letting workers and seniors keep more of what they earn. I am also pleased that the budget provides funds for the Brown Road bridge project in my district. Even in divided government, we proved compromise can deliver results.”

The Legislature has presented the budget to the governor for approval.
