Rep. Jenkins-Arno supports plan to increase school safety
RELEASE|May 14, 2025

State Rep. Nancy Jenkins-Arno (R-Rollin Twp) today voted to move the bipartisan package aimed at making Michigan schools safer for students and staff. The comprehensive plan, which passed the House, focuses on strengthening school security, enhancing mental health resources, and ensuring school personnel are well-prepared for emergencies.

“Every student deserves to feel safe and supported at school,” said Jenkins-Arno. “This plan recognizes that safety goes beyond locked doors, and it means building an environment where students are heard and cared for.”

Key components of the school safety plan include:

  • Requiring schools to regularly update emergency operation plans and revise fire and security drill protocols.
  • Providing safety training for school personnel through the Michigan State Police and the Office of School Safety.
  • Requiring the Office of School Safety to publish quarterly reports containing school safety tips and best practices.
  • Ensuring schools receive relevant safety tips and alerts from the Michigan State Police in a timely manner.
  • Including the OK2SAY confidential tip line on student ID cards, so students know how to use it when they see or hear something concerning.

“The package takes a thoughtful approach to school safety,” said Jenkins-Arno. “We’re not only working to prevent tragedies, but also create school environments that students can thrive in academically, emotionally, and socially.”
