Rep. Jenkins-Arno leads charge for transparency in state spending
RELEASE|March 17, 2026

State Rep. Nancy Jenkins-Arno (R-Rollin Township), chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), today reaffirmed her commitment to transparency and accountability in Michigan’s budgeting process as her committee reviews every single direct grant being requested through the state budget process.

“These hearings are designed to make sure every request for direct funding is made openly and with full public visibility,” said Jenkins-Arno. “We are carefully examining each proposal to make sure it’s necessary, well supported, and truly benefits the people of Michigan.”

In previous years, numerous direct grants were added to the state budget at the last minute, leaving lawmakers and the public little time, if any, to review them. Last year, Jenkins-Arno and the House enacted significant transparency reforms, requiring that all direct grant requests be submitted at least 45 days before budget approval and include detailed public disclosures, such as the legislator making the request and other key information.

The LEO Subcommittee has been conducting a thorough review of all proposed spending items to give taxpayers clear insight into how state funds may be allocated.

“By conducting these reviews publicly, we are strengthening the integrity and transparency of the budget process, and helping restore trust in the government,” said Jenkins-Arno. “Instead of important decisions being made behind closed doors, Michigan taxpayers can now know how their money is being spent.”
