State Rep. Nancy Jenkins-Arno (R-Rollin Township) today voted to protect fairness and opportunity in women’s athletics by supporting bills that would prohibit biological males from competing in girls’ sports.
“Girls deserve to compete on a fair playing field,” said Jenkins-Arno. “They’ve fought hard for equal opportunities in athletics, and allowing biological males to participate in girls’ sports creates a fundamental unfairness. This is about standing up for our daughters, sisters, and young women across Michigan who train to compete with integrity.”
House Bill 4066 ensures public school boards categorize athletic teams based on biological sex, explicitly prohibiting male students from joining female-designated sports teams. House Bill 4469 complements that measure by amending the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to permit K-12 educational institutions to determine athletic eligibility based on the sex recorded on an individual’s original birth certificate, issued at or near the time of birth.
“Our girls deserve every opportunity to succeed in an environment that is both fair and safe,” said Jenkins-Arno. “Boys have their own athletic divisions for a reason. There’s no justification for them to compete in girls’ sports, where it undermines the integrity of the game, and the opportunities meant for young women.”
House Bills 4066 and 4469 now advance to the Senate for further consideration.
