State Rep. Jaime Greene’s plan to preserve critical road funding for Macomb County is now law after being signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday.
House Bill 5922 ensures Macomb County will retain the vital transportation funds it has relied on for years to improve local infrastructure, alleviate traffic congestion, and maintain road safety. The measure received overwhelming bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.
“This is a big win for Macomb County residents and drivers across Michigan,” said Greene, R-Richmond. “By securing these funds, we’ve ensured our community has the resources it needs to keep roads safe and reduce congestion. I’m grateful for the bipartisan effort that made this possible and for the governor’s recognition of the importance of this legislation.”
The need for the bill arose due to population changes that threatened to disrupt the state’s transportation funding formula. Rapid growth in Kent County placed it in the same subcategory as Macomb County, potentially forcing the two counties to split funding and reducing the amount each received.
HB 5922 adjusts population thresholds in the funding formula, allowing both Macomb and Kent counties to maintain their historical share of transportation funds.
“This new law brings stability and fairness to our state’s transportation funding system,” Greene said. “It ensures that both Macomb and Kent counties can continue addressing their infrastructure needs without compromise.”
