State Rep. Jaime Greene today testified in front of the House Committee on Health Policy in support of her plan to remove toxic elements from baby food.
“This is an important step in protecting Michigan’s children,” said Greene (R-Richmond). “We can’t jeopardize the healthy development of our babies by allowing unsafe materials in their food. We need to have clear guidelines in place to make sure that these elements are kept away from the manufacturing process. Our children deserve better.”
House Bill 4865 would establish testing, disclosure, labeling, and recall requirements related to toxic elements in baby food sold in Michigan. It would require food processors that manufacture baby food for sale or distribution in the state to test representative samples of each production lot for toxic elements using a laboratory.
If testing shows that a baby food product exceeds the standards for toxic elements, the manufacturer would have to either dispose of the product or use it as animal feed. If the product had already been sold before the testing results came in, the manufacturer must issue a recall.
