State Rep. Jaime Greene today gave testimony to the House Communications and Technology Committee in support of a pilot program that would incorporate the use of artificial intelligence at the state level.

House Bill 5899, introduced by Greene, would establish an Artificial Intelligence Governing Board appointed by the governor. The bill would require the creation of a pilot program to evaluate generative AI use by state agencies.

“State agencies are designed to serve the people, and we as lawmakers have a responsibility to ensure that these departments are using generative AI responsibly,” said Greene (R-Richmond). “The only way we can build public trust is by carefully reviewing the use of this technology. We need to guarantee that factors like privacy and security are being prioritized. There are clear benefits to generative AI, like improved efficiency, but we have to take precautions. We need to evaluate this technology closely before it is implemented broadly across state government.”

The program would allow approved state employees to work with AI tools in a controlled environment, while establishing safeguards that protect sensitive data.
