Calhoun County representative helps lead the charge in finally fixing Michigan roads for good
State Rep. Steve Frisbie on Thursday helped spearhead the House Republican Road Funding Plan that fulfills his campaign promises to develop a strong plan for Calhoun County residents.
“I am proud to be a part of the Republican plan to find a permanent fix to road funding,” said Frisbie, R-Pennfield. “This is a part of the promises I made to Calhoun County residents to fight to make our roads safe while ensuring all money paid at the pump goes towards our roads. Michiganders want their money at the pump to fund the roads and our plan will allow us to address long-term solutions for better roads from the driveway to the highway.”
Frisbie’s bill in the package, HB 4181, would eliminate the 6% sales tax on gas at the pump and this would be replaced by separate legislation that would make it where motor fuel taxes would go entirely to the roads.
The Republican plan will dedicate $3.1 billion to fixing our crumbling infrastructure every year without raising taxes by:
- Ending corporate welfare and similar earmarks ($1.1 billion)
- Increased revenue from higher tax returns ($600 million)
- Cutting pork barrel spending ($500 million)
- Dedicating all taxes paid at the pump to roads ($945 million)
“The people I represent are fed up with rising costs and a hefty tax increase for road funding won’t fly with them,” Frisbie said. “The fact is, we’ve got every cent we need for these improvements already at our disposal, but we’ve got to free it up by cutting corporate handouts and unnecessary pork projects. Only then can we start investing in what the people of Michigan really need: better and safer roads in their communities.”
The House Republican plan is a real, permanent solution to Michigan’s crumbling road crisis with no new taxes. HBs 4180-87 were referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
