This week, Rep. Steve Frisbie (R–Battle Creek) cast his support for the Michigan House’s fiscal year 2026 K–12 budget, a landmark plan that puts students first through historic funding increases and greater local control.
“By raising the per-pupil foundation allowance to $12,000—a $2,392 increase per student—we’re investing directly in our classrooms and cutting out cumbersome grants so districts can address their unique needs,” Frisbie said.
Budget Highlights:
- Unprecedented Foundation Boost: Foundation allowance jumps to $12,000 per student, the highest level ever in Michigan, freeing up more resources for core instruction and support services.
- Consolidated Flexibility: Categorical programs—including school resource officers, safe transportation, and breakfast and lunch programming—are folded into the base allowance, slashing red tape and empowering local leaders to deploy funds where they matter most.
- Restored Safety & Mental Health: More than $300 million dedicated to school counselors, trauma-informed training, and on-campus security, reversing last year’s cuts and ensuring every child learns in a safe, supportive environment.
The budget now moves to the Senate for final consideration. Rep. Frisbie invites parents, educators, and community stakeholders to share feedback as lawmakers refine this historic investment in Michigan’s students.
