On Tuesday, State Rep. Steve Carra (R-Three Rivers) voted with the House Oversight Committee to authorize subpoenas on a number of Michigan’s top government officials, including two subpoenas on Attorney General Dana Nessel. The subpoenas on Nessel pertain to two different criminal referrals that her office received for another Democrat official and an organization tied to Alanna Maguire. Both of these referrals appear to have been subsequently buried and received no follow up investigation.
“It is far past time for someone to hold our Attorney General accountable for this cover up,” Carra said. “She has turned our state’s top law enforcement office into a partisan tool. Her selective prosecution of prominent right-wing figures has made this obvious for years, but now she’s also been caught red-handed covering for her family and friends. To call this kind of corrupt behavior egregious and unacceptable is an understatement.”
The subpoenas authorized by the Oversight Committee on Nessel relate specifically to a criminal referral from the Secretary of State for an organization called Bipartisan Solutions, and a dropped investigation on a top Democrat official who is also a former member of Nessel’s transition team. The Secretary of State’s office referred the Bipartisan Solutions case to the Attorney General in 2023 for the enforcement of penalties, detailing how it employed a fraudulent dark money scheme to raise money for a ballot initiative called Free and Equal Michigan, which is co-chaired by Alanna Maguire.
Nessel ignored this criminal referral but is currently attempting to prosecute a political fundraiser who works for Republican candidates and is accused by Nessel of conduct nearly identical to Maguire’s. Nessel is one of several government actors that will soon be subpoenaed, with subpoenas on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director also having received authorization from the Oversight Committee on Tuesday.
“The corrupt Lansing establishment has gotten away with their schemes with no pushback from either political party for far too long,” Carra said. “We are going to hold these politicians accountable to the people of Michigan. Far from acting for the benefit of the people they represent, we have some of Michigan’s top public officials handing out favors to their friends and abusing their power in office. Dana Nessel pretends to champion the rule of law while either circumventing it or exploiting it for her own gain. This must come to an end.”
