State Rep. Ken Borton today commended the reopening plan announced by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, urging even broader reopening to help the people of Michigan.
“Finally, after months of secrecy and stonewalling, Gov. Whitmer has released a set of measurable criteria for reopening our state and lifting her burdensome restrictions,” said Borton, of Gaylord. “The governor’s announcement is certainly a step in the right direction, but her plan falls short of the full reopening that would place the people of Northern Michigan on the path to financial recovery.”
Whitmer announced on Thursday a four-stage reopening plan, with each phase dependent on the number of eligible Michigan residents who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The first phase, for instance, would take effect two weeks after 55% of the eligible population has received the first dose and would allow in-person work at any type of business. The final phase would entirely lift the gathering and facemask orders two weeks after 70% of eligible residents have been vaccinated with one dose.
“Capacity limits and other restrictions have been hurting employers and employees at Michigan businesses, and the reopening metrics are an encouraging sign,” Borton said. “I will continue to urge Gov. Whitmer and her administration to rescind the orders entirely — an action that will provide businesses swifter economic relief.”
