LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan House today passed legislation sponsored by Rep. Steve Frisbie to protect consumer energy choice and prevent local governments from banning the use of natural gas and propane.
House Bill 4486 prohibits municipalities from adopting or enforcing ordinances or policies that restrict the use or installation of natural gas or propane appliances and related infrastructure. The legislation preserves access to affordable, reliable energy options for homeowners and businesses while preventing unnecessary strain on Michigan’s electric grid.
“Families and small businesses should be able to choose what works best for their homes and operations without local governments forcing one-size-fits-all energy mandates,” said Rep. Steve Frisbie. “This bill protects affordability, reliability, and common sense at a time when energy costs are already high.”
Supporters of the legislation note that forced electrification policies can increase costs for consumers, limit appliance choice, and place additional pressure on the electric system during peak demand periods.
House Bill 4486 now advances to the Senate for consideration.
