Vaupel brings awareness to Tardive Dyskinesia
RELEASE|May 7, 2019

State Rep. Hank Vaupel, chair of the House Health Policy Committee, has introduced a measure declaring the first full week in May as Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week in the state of Michigan.

Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a neurological disorder that causes repetitive, uncontrolled jerking movements in the face, neck and tongue.

Certain antipsychotic medications can result in TD as a side effect. The elderly, diabetics, and females are most likely to experience TD. Approximately 25 percent of patients who receive long-term treatment of antipsychotic medications experience TD.

“We must bring attention to this condition so that medication can be properly dosed to allow patients to live their healthiest lives,” said Vaupel, of Fowlerville.

The resolution was adopted with overwhelming support.
