Rep. Whiteford votes to expand Schutmaat Park
RELEASE|February 28, 2019

State Rep. Mary Whiteford today voted to support the continued renovation of Schutmaat Park in Heath Township.

The legislation approved by the House Appropriations Committee includes $50,000 to further expand the park and make room for continued improvements. The planned improvements are part of a four-year undertaking by the local community to restore the community park and improve accessibility.

“The restoration of Schutmaat Park is truly a rags-to-riches story—from overlooked park to treasured local gem— and I look forward to seeing what this continued investment will turn into,” Whiteford, a member of the Appropriations Committee, said. “I’m proud to continue supporting the hard work of the residents of Heath Township.”

The full plan approved by the committee includes $26 million for 34 recreational development projects and 30 land acquisition projects statewide, including the Schutmaat Park acquisition.  The project investments outlined in the proposal were recommended by the Natural Resources Trust Fund Board in December. Recommendations are subject to approval by the Michigan Legislature, a process started with today’s vote. House Bill 4244 next advances to the House floor for further consideration.

Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the oil, gas and mineral royalties generated on leased state land. Projects are awarded on an annual basis in partnership with local governments.
