State Rep. Jason Wentworth, of Clare, continues to monitor the emergency situation in Arenac and Gladwin counties and is urging the governor to declare a State of Emergency in the area.

Rep. Wentworth and Sen. Jim Stamas urged Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to declare the emergency in a letter yesterday. While she has declared a State of Emergency in Midland County, she has not addressed the crisis in Wentworth’s district.

“The damage caused from the heavy rain over the past several days and flooding has been devastating and extremely dangerous for our families in Arenac and Gladwin counties,” Wentworth said. “Many people have had to evacuate their homes as the streets have turned into lakes. There is no doubt in my mind this is an emergency, which is why I am urging Gov. Whitmer to do the right thing and declare it as an emergency.

“I can appreciate the Governor reacting quickly last night by declaring the State of Emergency in Midland County due to the imminent threat of lives. Now, I am encouraging the Governor to approve the State of Emergency for Gladwin and Arenac County due to the devastation they have experienced.”

The State of Emergency is necessary, Wentworth added, because local communities would be provided resources they need and could reach out to the state for additional assistance.

“This would be a step in the right direction for our communities,” Wentworth said.

As more information becomes available, Wentworth said he will pass the information along to local officials. If residents would like to contact his office, they are encouraged to do so by email at JasonWentworth@house.mi.gov or by phone at 517-373-8962.

“I understand how challenging these last few months have been, with COVID-19 and now with this flooding,” Wentworth said. “I want residents to know I hear your concerns, and I am here to help. I will continue to work with local officials to monitor the situation.”
