Rep. Miller leads House in honoring local heroes
RELEASE|March 1, 2019

State Rep. Aaron Miller, of Sturgis, honored two local heroes today by formally recognizing them on the House floor.

Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Aaron Steensma and Tpr. Daniel Thayer were formally presented with a special tribute highlighting their heroism and service in the line of duty by Rep. Miller.

“The Michigan State Police’s mission is to ‘provide the highest quality law enforcement and public safety services throughout Michigan’,” Rep. Miller said. “Through their service and sacrifice, Aaron and Dan have lived up to that vision and more.”

On Jan. 24, MSP personnel were executing a search warrant at a residence on Francisco Road in rural Union Township related to a cold case investigation when the suspect leveled a long gun at the officers. They were attempting to take cover when D/Sgt. Steensma was shot in the chest and Tpr. Thayer was shot in the chest and hand. Thankfully, both men were wearing body armor when they came under fire and have recovered from the incident.

“These men have faced dangers most of us cannot imagine,” Miller added. “It is my privilege to honor them for their service and commitment to keeping their community and state safe.”
