Rep. Markkanen announces Wildlife Habitat Grant Program recipients
RELEASE|October 30, 2019

State Rep. Greg Markkanen of Hancock announced today that Keweenaw, Baraga, and Ontonagon counties will receive grants from the Wildlife Habitat Grant Program through the Department of Natural Resources. Copper Country Chapter of American Woodcock Society will receive $16,400 to use in Keweenaw County and Sustainable Resources Institute will receive $138,600 to use in Baraga, and Ontonagon counties.

“I am excited to see revenue from our hunting and fishing licenses being spent here in the U.P. to bolster our game population,” Markkanen said.  “Like many of my fellow Yoopers, I spend a lot of money on licenses to hunt and fish in our beautiful peninsula. It is great to see the money come full circle.”

Over $990,000 will be shared across the state to conservation groups, local governments, landowners, and nonprofit organizations to enhance and improve the quality and quantity of game species habitat. The Wildlife Habitat Grant Program is funded with a portion of the yearly revenue from hunting and fishing licenses.
