Rep. Lightner: No-fault reform already delivering results for Michigan drivers
RELEASE|November 14, 2019

State Rep. Sarah Lightner, of Springport, today said the fee reduction announced by the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association is the first indication Michigan drivers will save a significant amount of money through the state’s recent car insurance reforms.

The MCCA announced it will charge a $100 per vehicle assessment for the year-long period beginning July 2, 2020. That is down from the current $220 per vehicle – a 55-percent decrease that is a direct result of reform supported by Lightner.

“The cost of legally driving in Michigan has taken a toll on many families, and for decades, people have demanded their elected officials step up and address the issue head on to deliver the rate relief they deserve,” Lightner said. “We approved a historic reform overhaul earlier this year to do just that, and it’s exciting news to see our changes already starting to deliver results. Beginning in July, drivers will see and feel real, guaranteed savings in their car insurance policies.”

The MCCA said the $100 per vehicle assessment — the lowest rate since 2003 — will be charged to drivers choosing to maintain unlimited lifetime personal injury protection benefits in their car insurance policies. Lightner said those who purchase alternative coverage levels under Michigan’s revised no-fault insurance law will see even greater savings.

The current $220 fee is assessed on all insured vehicles.
