Rep. Leutheuser: Michigan on ‘verge of history’ with car insurance reform
RELEASE|May 24, 2019

Michigan drivers would be in line for significantly lower car insurance rates through a bipartisan plan approved today by Rep. Eric Leutheuser and the state House.

The plan – approved with broad bipartisan support – guarantees lower rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stops price gouging on medical services provided to car accident victims, and combats fraudulent claims. All Michigan drivers will save money on the personal injury protection portion of their policies, and some could save hundreds of dollars a year or more, depending on which coverage options they choose.

The bipartisan solution – coming after months of hearings and weeks of negotiations – is designed to end Michigan’s reputation as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation. The plan should soon be headed to the governor for her expected signature.

Leutheuser – a former car dealership owner – heard complaints about the high cost of car insurance long before he was elected to the Michigan House in 2014.

“It’s one of the biggest reasons I wanted to serve in the Legislature – because it’s one of the biggest issues facing Michigan,” said Leutheuser, of Hillsdale. “The high cost of car insurance holds back families and prevents our entire state’s economy from running on all cylinders. Now we’re on the verge of history and delivering real reform. These changes will help families make ends meet and make the state a better place to live, work and raise a family. And it will make Michigan a better location for job providers.”

Michigan’s costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The bipartisan reform plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.
