Lawmaker: No-fault reform in exchange for tax increase never an option

State Rep. Beau LaFave, of Iron Mountain, today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s recent comments during an “Off The Record” interview where she claimed Republicans in the Legislature agreed to approve a gas tax hike in exchange for signing no-fault car insurance reform:

“The governor’s remarks about a so-called agreement with Republicans in the Legislature regarding a reckless gas tax increase in exchange for signing car insurance reform couldn’t be further from the truth.

“The real reason the governor signed car insurance reform into law – despite her original veto threat – was because it was a sound, bipartisan solution Michigan drivers have been demanding from their elected officials for decades. Vetoing car insurance reform would’ve been political suicide.

“I never would’ve agreed to her radical gas tax hike proposal – not even if it was a 1-cent increase – in exchange for a signature on car insurance reform.

“The governor either cannot remember simple conversations, or she is intentionally lying. Either way, the people deserve better.”
