Rep. Kahle votes to lower car insurance rates for drivers in Lenawee County, across Michigan
RELEASE|May 9, 2019

State Rep. Bronna Kahle today continued her fight to lower car insurance rates for drivers in Lenawee County and the entire state, voting to reform Michigan’s broken no-fault system.

The plan approved by Kahle and the state House guarantees lower rates and gives drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stops price gouging on medical services for car accident victims, and combats fraudulent claims to help lower costs.

The changes are designed to end Michigan’s long-standing tenure as the state with the costliest car insurance rates in the nation – twice as high as in neighboring states such as Ohio.

“Everyone in Lenawee County deserves relief from Michigan’s out-of-control car insurance rates – and this vote is a major step toward finally achieving that goal,” Kahle, of Adrian, said after casting a crucial vote in favor of the plan. “It’s past time to make the cost of driving more affordable for our families and seniors, and I will do all I can to get this plan to the finish line. As I listen to people in our communities, the high cost of Michigan’s car insurance is a top concern.”

Michigan’s costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The House plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.

The sweeping legislation now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
