Rep. Hoitenga calls for an end to licensure discrimination

Michigan House approves legislation

State Rep. Michele Hoitenga’s plan to help Michigan residents with felony convictions get back on their feet and further their careers was unanimously approved by the House today.

Current law prohibits anyone convicted of any felony from becoming a licensed insurance agent in Michigan. Under Hoitenga’s plan, the Department of Insurance and Financial Services would no longer be required to automatically deny applicants with prior convictions older than 10 years so long as they are not violent or financial crimes.

“Individuals with certain unrelated felonies should not be disqualified from furthering their career in this field,” said Hoitenga, of Manton. “This bill allows people to help contribute to our state’s success and their own.”

The second-term representative noted current law has also led practicing insurance agents to lose their licenses after a conviction. A resident recently reached out to her asking for a solution to this unfair, anti-competitive practice.

“People should be given the opportunity to try to get their lives back on track,” Hoitenga said. “The state shouldn’t deny them that chance.”

House Bill 4044 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
