Rep. Hoitenga brings impactful reforms to Michigan’s no-fault system
RELEASE|May 9, 2019

House approves landmark legislation

State Rep. Michele Hoitenga today voted to bring lower car insurance prices to residents and families in Northern Michigan, joining House legislators in approving a plan to reform Michigan’s broken no-fault system.

The House plan guarantees lower rates for all drivers in Michigan, reducing what currently is the highest average car insurance premium in the nation. The average premium is also twice as high as in neighboring states. The bill gives drivers a choice on car insurance policies, stops price gouging on medical services for car accident victims and combats fraudulent claims to help lower costs.

“Whenever I’ve traveled across Northern Michigan speaking to residents, a primary concern has been car insurance costs – and how we can make them more affordable,” said Hoitenga, of Manton. “Through my work on the Republican Action Plan Committee heading into this current legislative term, I took that input and helped make rate relief for drivers a top priority. I’m proud to deliver that with this vote.”

Michigan’s costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The House plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.

The sweeping legislation now advances to the Senate for consideration.
