Rep. Hank Vaupel Weekly Column: February 24, 2019
RELEASE|February 25, 2019

This week, I introduced a resolution to declare Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) a critical health issue. ACEs negatively affect the current and future well-being of children due to toxic stress related to abuse, neglect, and other family dysfunctions. These can cause future physical and mental health issues, as carefully researched in a study conducted by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Kaiser Permanente.

Sadly, national and state surveys indicate as many as 70 percent of Michigan adults had at least one ACE during their childhood, and as many as 20 percent had four or more such instances. These preventable childhood experiences often cause lifetime conditions and illnesses costing billions of dollars in resources, ultimately reducing lifetime expectancy. My resolution would commit the Legislature to action on this issue and encourage the governor to direct agencies to assess and report progress on reducing ACEs.

It was a pleasure attending the 2nd Annual Amber Reineck House Gala Saturday evening. The Amber Reineck House’s mission is to acquire property for use by nonprofit organizations for housing and treatment recovery services. Courtney Atsalakis Reineck did a tremendous job organizing the gala, which focused on the need to reduce stigma and encourage education in a recovery-friendly community. Great job by all involved, and thank you for supporting those in need.

I had the honor of speaking at Good Morning Livingston’s monthly program, hosted by the Howell Chamber of Commerce, along with state Sen. Lana Theis. Sen. Theis and I provided a legislative update and answered many great questions from those in attendance. Thank you to everyone who came and showed interest in your state government.
