Rep. Griffin: Critical House vote advances landmark plan to save Michigan families money on car insurance
RELEASE|May 24, 2019

State Rep. Beth Griffin today voted for a historic bipartisan plan that delivers significant savings for Michigan drivers on their car insurance bills.

Griffin and the House approved a plan guaranteeing lower rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stopping price gouging on medical services for car accident victims, and combating fraudulent claims. All Michigan drivers will save money on the PIP portion of their policies, and some could save hundreds of dollars a year, depending on which coverage options they choose.

The bipartisan solution – coming after weeks of negotiations – is designed to end Michigan’s long tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation. The plan should soon be headed to the governor for her expected signature.

“We are on the verge of fixing a broken system that has been draining Michigan family finances for decades,” said Griffin, of Mattawan. “This plan has all the elements necessary for real relief – providing choice in coverage levels, preventing medical overbilling, and fighting fraud. Now it’s time for the governor to finish the job and get these reforms into law — providing long overdue savings for Southwest Michigan families.”

Michigan’s costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The bipartisan reform plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.

The legislation is Senate Bill 1.
