Rep. Griffin: Car insurance reforms ‘already paying dividends’
RELEASE|November 14, 2019

West Michigan drivers to see significant, guaranteed savings

State Rep. Beth Griffin, of Mattawan, today said the fee reduction announced by the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association is proof Michigan drivers will save significant money through the state’s recent car insurance reforms.

The MCCA announced it will charge a $100 per vehicle assessment for the year-long period beginning July 2, 2020. That is down from the current $220 per vehicle – a 55-percent decrease that is a direct result of reform supported by Griffin.

“The MCCA lowering its per-vehicle assessment by over $100 shows our solution to the state’s largest financial issue facing our drivers is already paying dividends.” Griffin said. “This is tremendous news for West Michigan drivers and motorists across the state. It’s about time they see more affordable car insurance rates, and I expect rates to drop even more come July 2020.”

The MCCA said the $100 per vehicle assessment — the lowest rate since 2003 — will be charged to drivers choosing to maintain unlimited lifetime personal injury protection benefits in their car insurance policies. Griffin said those who purchase alternative coverage levels under Michigan’s revised no-fault insurance law will see even greater savings.

The current $220 fee is assessed on all insured vehicles.
