Rep. Frederick, Sen. Barrett praise resiliency of Shiawassee County following tornado
RELEASE|March 15, 2019

State Rep. Ben Frederick and Sen. Tom Barrett expressed appreciation for first responders and praised the resiliency of people in Shiawassee County after a tornado tore through the area on Thursday evening.

The legislators toured the storm damage today, meeting community members who were affected.

“The storm damage we viewed is very devastating. It’s a relief that everyone in the area got out with their lives intact and without serious injury,” said Frederick, of Owosso. “We appreciate all of the efforts made by first responders and volunteers to help the people who are affected.”

More than 60 homes were damaged in the storm, with 12 properties being reported as total losses.

“It was impressive to see so many neighbors helping neighbors in the aftermath of this devastating tornado,” said Barrett, of Charlotte. “We were out assessing some of the damage in the morning and all you could hear were chainsaws from the volunteers who were helping clear debris. That’s the sign of a strong community.”

The legislators are working with the governor’s office to help the community gain access to state emergency assistance.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure Shiawassee County has access to the resources they need,” Frederick said.

The pair also praised the governor for reaching out to county officials to provide assistance.

“It’s great to see everyone come together in this way,” Barrett said. “We’re both proud to be affiliated with this resilient community.”
