State Rep. Ryan Berman, of Commerce Township, today formally introduced a plan protecting consumers from fraud when they purchase re-sold tickets.

Commonly referred to as ‘scalping’ tickets, individuals often buy and sell admission to theatre shows, athletic games, concerts and other events through secondary markets. The internet has offered fertile ground for this practice and the scalping industry has been valued at $5 billion as recently as 2015 as its popularity continues to grow.

Berman’s proposal, HB 4886, puts certain protections in place for a ticket transaction to be lawful in Michigan – such as a seller having to disclose whether or not they have tickets in their possession at the time of sale.

“This is a very straightforward consumer protection proposal that helps people know what they are paying for,” Berman said. “If we’re going to offer these types of services in Michigan, we have to also offer fair protections for consumers.”

HB 4886 has been referred to the House Communications and Technology Committee for consideration.
