Rep. Afendoulis named Legislator of the Year by Michigan Retailers Association
RELEASE|February 7, 2020

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN — State Rep. Lynn Afendoulis, of Grand Rapids Township has received the Legislator of the Year award from the Michigan Retailers Association. Rep. Afendoulis received the honor, along with Rep. Joe Tate of Detroit, for spearheading legislation that brings sales tax fairness to retailers in Michigan. Specifically, this package requires out-of-state online retailers to collect Michigan sales tax for transactions in Michigan.

“This was an Amazon-versus-Main Street Michigan bill and I’m proud to have helped create an even playing field for Michigan retailers,” Rep. Afendoulis said. “I am so honored the MRA chose me for this recognition and I pledge to continue to work with them on behalf of the people of our state to grow and improve our Michigan economy.”

This legislation was inspired by a constituent who contacted Rep. Afendoulis with a concern that out-of-state retailers had a competitive advantage over Michigan businesses. People were viewing merchandise in his store and then shopping online to avoid paying Michigan’s sales tax. This is a good example of what one person can do to move legislation in our state.

Do you have a bill idea that will move Michigan forward? If so, contact Rep. Afendoulis’ office by calling (517) 373-0218 or by email at [email protected].
