State Rep. Lynn Afendoulis today testified before the House Families, Children, and Seniors Committee in support of a plan to ban dismemberment abortion, saying, “This is not about a woman’s right to choose or a child’s right to live. This is about our humanity.”
A dismemberment abortion is an abortion in which a health care worker intentionally uses any instrument, device, or object to dismember a living fetus out of a uterus. The legislation from Afendoulis is part of a package to ban the procedure and create penalties for violators.
“Set aside whatever you feel about the right to abortion and approach this simply as a human being of thought, reason and compassion,” she said. “Where else in the sphere of our lives is it acceptable to torture and dismember a living thing? How did we get here? We are appealing to all people of mercy and benevolence: This practice is barbaric, it is agonizing, it is outrageous and it must stop.”
House Bill 4321 remains under consideration by the Families, Children, and Seniors Committee.
