Johnson bill would make legislator pay equal to average Michigan wage
RELEASE|September 19, 2019

State Rep. Steve Johnson introduced legislation today that would make state legislator salaries equal to the average salary of a worker in Michigan.

“As we go through a tough budget season, it’s important for legislators to lead by example and be good public servants,” Johnson said. “Introducing this bill gives myself and my colleagues the chance to put our money where our mouth is.”

The average wage, as determined by data gathered by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, is currently approximately $47,000 a year. Rep. Johnson’s proposal requires the Legislature’s wages to be updated in conjunction with Michigan’s average wage every two years.

“We were elected to represent the interests of the people,” Johnson said. “I feel exorbitant financial incentives make it difficult to remain in touch with the people we serve.”

House Joint Resolution N has been referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
