State Rep. Gary Howell, of North Branch, this week testified before the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee in support of his legislation eliminating the fee for a Korean War veteran license plate. Howell’s measure is part of a bipartisan, five-bill package removing the fees for various veteran and military license plates.
“It’s important that we remember the contributions of our veterans during their time of service to our great nation,” said Howell, a U.S. Army veteran. “I have a particular interest in this proposal because of my time serving overseas in Korea near the DMZ in 1970. During the Korean War in the 1950’s, our country fought successfully against communism and because of our brave servicemen and women, South Korea remains free and prosperous to this day.”
As required by state law, the Secretary of State provides for the issuance and creation of each license plate issued in Michigan. There are varying fee requirements for each license place issued, veteran license plates having a $5 service fee.
“Respecting the sacrifices our military members have made to preserve the freedoms we cherish isn’t a partisan issue, and for that, I am grateful this legislation is being spearheaded from both sides of the aisle,” Howell said. “I also want to thank the Secretary of State for her support throughout this process. The Department of State has been a great partner in ensuring this small token of gratitude can be implemented statewide.”
House Bill 4683, along with the rest of the bill package, remains in the House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee for further consideration.
