House Appropriations Chair Hernandez leads approval of funding to aid Michigan’s coronavirus response
RELEASE|March 18, 2020

Rep. Shane Hernandez – chair of the Michigan House Appropriations Committee – issued the following statement tonight after the House approved an additional $125 million for coronavirus response. This brings the total state allocation to $150 million approved within the past week:

“While what is happening across our nation may seem unprecedented, it’s important to remind ourselves Michigan and the United States have gone through many challenges in the past. We have met and overcome these challenges by working together and helping those in need around us. We will do so again, and come out of this stronger than before. The financial support approved by the House tonight is one step in that direction. It comes with important accountability and legislative oversight provisions to ensure money will be spent in the best interests of the public and taxpayers.

“This funding will increase Michigan’s ability to monitor and test for coronavirus. It will help our hospitals as they brace for what could be an increase in cases in the days ahead. It will support the brave men and women in our health care industry as they work on the front lines to try and keep people safe.

“Their bravery and dedication should serve as a reminder that everyone can do their part to protect themselves and others during this challenging time. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, keep a safe social distance, and help those in our community who need help. It’s this spirit of cooperation that will once again guide Michigan through tough times to a brighter future.”
