State Rep. Doug Wozniak today praised the recent decision handed down by the Michigan Court of Claims rejecting the governor’s attempt to hand down felony penalties to Michigan businesses who violate her executive orders concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I have no doubt that health and safety is top priority at every workplace as hardworking people return to their jobs,” said Wozniak, of Shelby Township. “The governor was wrong to threaten Michigan workers and job providers with harsh and unfair penalties if they fail to follow her orders to a ‘T.’ I’m glad the Court of Claims stepped in and set things straight.”

The penalties Gov. Whitmer laid out could have included fines as high as $70,000 and up to three years in prison. The Michigan Court of Claims struck down the penalties, instead limiting the penalties for violating an executive order to the maximum of a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.
