Rep. Kahle: Listening to the needs of Lenawee County as COVID-19 response continues
RELEASE|April 24, 2020

Rep. Bronna Kahle today said she will continue to fight for Lenawee County residents as the governor revises ‘stay home’ orders and the Legislature increases oversight of the state’s response to COVID-19.

“People are hurting and frustrated by all of the challenges COVID-19 has brought to our community – and I’m listening to them,” Kahle said. “Our families, friends and neighbors are asking for reasonable, commonsense measures while doing all we can to protect public health.

“The governor’s revised ‘stay home’ order makes some modifications that will let more people safely get back to work and some outdoor activities – and I am thankful for those modifications. Yet, I know the governor could do more to get Michigan more in line with federal guidelines and focus on what activities could be done safely – rather than inconsistent, debatable determinations about what is ‘essential.’

“What everyone asks me and wants to know is … how do we recover safely? What steps should we be taking? The Legislature can and should be very involved in that process, because like me, it has members living in their home communities and in touch with the needs of the people they represent.”

The governor’s revised order will allow some changes Kahle and colleagues fought for in recent weeks – all of which will help more Michiganders safely return to work. Customers will now be able to purchase many items at store curbsides and for delivery. Garden centers and lawn care services will be allowed to resume. More outdoor activities will be permitted.

Also today, Kahle supported the Michigan Legislature’s creation of the Joint Select Committee on the COVID-19 Pandemic. The panel will include a total of 10 members from the House and Senate with bipartisan representation, serving as a conduit to the nearly 10 million people represented by the Legislature across Michigan.

“People must have a voice in how their state government responds to COVID-19 – and the Legislature is that voice,” Kahle said. “This committee will bring much-needed transparency and accountability to the process.”
