State Rep. Matt Hall’s plan permitting sports wagering in Michigan with important consumer protections has been signed into law.

With the governor’s signature, Michigan becomes the latest state to legalize sports betting. Hall said the legalization will benefit communities across the state through revenue for local public services and schools.

“Today marks the day Michigan took appropriate action to adapt to the modern era of gaming,” said Hall (R-Marshall). “Michigan residents will now have the means to legally participate in a hobby that includes important consumer protections and the state will no longer lose out on revenue being sent to neighboring states and countries overseas. We have played our cards right, and our economy, residents and communities will benefit because of it.”

Hall’s new law is part of a wide-ranging legislative package that provides a regulatory framework for sports betting so Michigan could move forward recognizing a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision that allows legalization. The law also allows online wagering through regulated websites and mobile apps offered through casinos.

In addition to the sports wagering provisions, other bills in the initiative that were signed by the governor allow for online casino-style gaming. A portion of revenue is to be directed to local governments where participating casinos are located. Hall said communities with casinos – such as Emmett Township in Calhoun County, where FireKeepers Casino is located – will reap the benefits from revenue accrued from internet-wagering.

“Michigan was behind the times because our gaming laws had not been updated in more than two decades,” Hall said. “Not anymore. Michigan now has the regulatory framework in place to capitalize on this growing industry, and protect consumers who participate in it. I couldn’t be more excited to have this be my first legislation signed into law. It will go a long way to ensure Michiganders are safe while wagering their hard-earned money.”

The law features built-in safety features and strict state oversight – including protections against fraud and age verification systems to prevent those under 21 from participating.

House Bill 4917 becomes Hall’s first piece of legislation to become a Public Act since taking office.
