SB 134:  Amends the Revised Judicature Act to create a specialty court interlock program. The changes in the bill expand the usage of ignition interlock devices to all specialty courts.

Sponsor: Sen. Johnson (R)
Passage: 82-25 with Immediate Effect

Why I voted NO:  Opponents of the bills may argue that DWI / sobriety courts already have the ability to order the use of ignition interlocks, and that no change in law is necessary.

SB 135:  Amends the Michigan Vehicle Code to update references to the DUI/Sobriety Court to specialty court interlock program.

Sponsor: Sen. Hertel (D)
Passage: 82-25 with Immediate Effect

Why I voted NO:  Opponents of the bills may argue that DWI / sobriety courts already have the ability to order the use of ignition interlocks, and that no change in law is necessary.

HB 4829:  Amends the Michigan Business Tax Act by allowing a multiphase Brownfield project to receive an extension to complete the project without penalty.

Sponsor: Rep. Aiyash (D)
Passage: 74-33 with Immediate Effect

Why I voted NO:  The extension provide last term with PA 27 of 2021 was to help the project move on due to COVID-19 issues. COVID-19 has not been an issue for a few years now and therefore there is no need to extend the project.

BILL PACKAGE HB 4294-4296 & 4302:  This is a 10-bill package that eliminates the ability to become married under the age of 18. Many of the tag-along bills eliminate references to underage marriages in other sections of law, like the Probate Code.

Sponsors: Reps. Hope (D), Farhat (D), Coffia (D), Edwards (D), Brixie (D), Grant (D), Hill (D), Young (D), & Andrews (D)
HB 4294 Passage: 99-8 with Immediate Effect

HB 4295 & 4302 Passages: 102-5 with Immediate Effect
HB 4296 Passage: 101-6 with Immediate Effect

Why I voted YES on HB 4295, 4296, & 4302:  These bills prevent sexual, emotional, and financial abuse against children and coercive marriages set up by parents for selfish reasons.

Why I voted NO on HB 4294:  This bill allows one county (Wayne County) to charge more for marriage licenses.
