The Michigan Constitution is clear on corporate welfare

When it comes to giving billions of your hard-earned taxpayer dollars to China and wealthy corporations, Democrats circumvent the Michigan Constitution, says Vice Chair Rep. Matt Maddock (R-Milford):

The Michigan Constitution is clear on the topic of corporate welfare. Article 4, Section 30 of the state Constitution states: “The assent of two-thirds of the members elected to and serving in each house of the Legislature shall be required for the appropriation of public money or property for local or private purposes.”

Yet, Democrat leadership in both legislative chambers are ignoring this constitutional principle, most recently with Senate Bill 7 in the House – which did not receive two-thirds support.

The reason for this Constitutional principle is simple: the majority party in government should not be able to pass bills that grant massive amount of your money to their friends in the private sector, especially without two-thirds support in both chambers. The purpose of your taxpayer money is to fund the government in order to protect your rights, not to give hundreds of millions of dollars to a paper mill.

“Corporate welfare has no place in a free and just society,” said Rep. Carra, R-Three Rivers, Chair of the Freedom Caucus. “We need a business-friendly environment for all, not just the politically connected.”

“Circumventing this process is improper governance and violates our sacred oath to uphold the Constitution,” said Rep. Joe Fox, R-Fremont.
